Amotivation: The Absence of Drive

What is Amotivation?

Amotivation is a state of lacking any intention to engage in a behavior. It is characterized by feelings of incompetence, a lack of perceived value in an activity, and a sense that one’s actions will not yield the desired outcomes.

Causes and Implications

  • Often stems from repeated failures or feeling a lack of control.
  • Can lead to disengagement and withdrawal from activities.
  • Represents the lowest level of autonomy in self-determination theory.

Overcoming amotivation often requires rebuilding a sense of competence and finding small, achievable goals to create a sense of progress and connection to personal values.
